Buena Vista University was founded in 1891 by the Presbyterian Church with a motto of “Education for Service.” BVU provides students with practical academic experiences that lead to meaningful careers and lives. Approximately 1300 undergraduate and graduate students enjoy the picturesque lakeside campus in Storm Lake. This main campus is at the forefront of information technology because BVU gives its students laptop computers and “anytime, anywhere” wireless Internet access. A graduate program in school guidance and counseling is available. In the spirit of creating lifelong learning experiences for area residents, BVU offers the opportunity to audit classes for a modest fee, subject to space availability and permission of the instructors.

Iowa Central Community College

Built in 1971, the Storm Lake Center for Iowa Central Community College offers the full range of community college programs. The center is a satellite of ICCC in Fort Dodge, approximately 60 miles to the east. The Storm Lake center serves as a link to the community schools, and as another option for secondary education in the community. The college has joined with BVU in a cooperative program to earn a bachelor’s degree, with students studying two years at ICCC and two at BVU. Iowa Central offers a wide range of vocational training courses, and participates in the Iowa Jobs Training Program and the Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training Program. Programs include nursing, business administration, office technology, Spanish, computer technology, industry training, management and more.
